Yes. The app itself is free. It uses your own free Gemini API key (and optionally Groq), both of which have generous free tiers from Google and Groq directly — no subscription to us required.
For typical personal use, no. Both Gemini and Groq offer free API keys with usage limits that are more than enough for everyday document summarizing. You only pay if you exceed their free tier, and that's a relationship directly between you and them — not us.

Your API key is stored only in your browser's local storage, on your own device. It's never transmitted to us or to anyone other than Google/Groq directly, when making a summary request.
The web and Android app currently support PDF and DOCX (Word) files. The Windows desktop app additionally supports DOC and PPT/PPTX.
This is the "bring your own key" (BYOK) model. It keeps the app free and avoids a middleman server that would otherwise need to see your documents to process them. It also means your usage is billed directly to you at Google/Groq's own rates (usually free), rather than us reselling access at a markup.
Yes, the web version works in Safari on iPhone and can be added to your home screen. One limitation: sharing a file directly from another app (like WhatsApp) into AISS isn't supported on iOS due to a platform limitation in Safari — you can still open the app and choose a file manually.
Gemini is the main engine and reads documents (including PDFs) directly, producing the most detailed summaries. Groq is an automatic backup — if Gemini is busy or temporarily unavailable, Groq (running Llama 3.3 70B) steps in so you're not left waiting.
